Adoption Process

Adopting from the Chilton County Animal Shelter

At the Chilton County Animal Shelter, we want your adoption experience to be simple, positive, and full of joy. You don’t need an appointment or a pre-application, just stop by and meet our wonderful dogs and puppies waiting for their forever homes.

How the Process Works

When you arrive, one of our staff members will give you a tour of the shelter and introduce you to the pets available for adoption. You’ll also have the chance to sit down with an Adoption Counselor to talk about your lifestyle, family, and what you’re looking for in a companion. From there, you’ll spend time getting to know the dogs you’re interested in until you find the one that feels like the perfect match.

Not sure if a dog will be the right fit? No problem! We offer trial adoptions that allow you to bring a dog home for seven days to see how things go. If it’s a match, you can come back and finalize the adoption after the trial period.

Most adoptions (and foster-to-adopt arrangements) are completed the very same day, so you won’t have to wait long to welcome your new best friend home.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

  • Bring the family: If possible, bring any family members along so everyone can meet the dog you’re considering.
  • Take your time: Finding the right match is important, so please allow plenty of time to meet with an Adoption Counselor, spend time with the dogs, and complete the adoption paperwork.
  • Introducing your pets: If you already have a dog at home, we encourage you to bring them in for a meet-and-greet. Just be sure to have someone available to stay with your dog until it’s time for introductions.
  • Popular pets: Small dogs and puppies are adopted quickly—sometimes within 48 hours! Since all of our adoptions are first-come, first-served, we aren’t able to place holds or reserve animals. If more than one family is interested in the same pet, adoption will go to the first approved application.
  • Staff guidance: Our staff is here to help guide you every step of the way and ensure the best match for both you and the dog.

Final Steps

Once you’ve chosen your new companion, your dog will receive a final health check in our clinic. We’ll go over their medical records with you and answer any questions you may have. For your peace of mind, we recommend scheduling a follow-up wellness visit with your own veterinarian within 7–10 days after adoption.
